Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) was developed by Patricia Resick, Candice Monson, & Kathleen Chard to treat symptoms of PTSD for all types of trauma. It has also been successfully applied to those suffering from military trauma, refugees, survivors of sexual assault, and other trauma. CPT is a manualized 12 session cognitive behavioral treatment for PTSD which offers an alternative to purely exposure based interventions. Clients are asked to write about the impact and specific details of a traumatic memory. These accounts are read aloud during the sessions. As a cognitively focused treatment, it also directly targets associated problems such as depression, guilt and anger.
